Little Bits of (Constructed) Language: A Guide for Writers
So you want to add a constructed language to your story. Brilliant! You have several options in doing this. You can totally just write gibberish phrases and kinda just throw them around, or you can construct a full language, with all the bells and whistles, and use it to your heart’s content. But if you’re too lazy to create a whole conlang, but not quite lazy enough to just type random letters, this is the guide for you!
Using examples from a story of my own, I will walk you through how to construct pieces- and only pieces of a language, suitable for use in a short story. This will not give you something you can speak or write long screeds in, but it just might give your story that extra touch it needs to be more excellent.
Disclaimer: I don’t consider myself to be a conlanger and have never created a full language. I almost didn’t call this a constructed language thing at all, but calling it a language veneer (venlang?) sounded unbearably pretentious.
Let’s go!
