Artist and filmmaker Julien de Casabianca’s Outings Project was first conceived when he visited the Louvre and stumbled upon an Ingres painting of a female prisoner tucked away in a corner of the museum. Casablanca, then, decided to free her both figuratively and literally by producing a reproduction of the character as piece of urban art. Although many people won’t recognize the piece itself or the artist, Casablanca’s purpose was to exhibit her beauty and freedom for the purpose of being properly admire.
After Casablanca shared images of his first artwork online, other artists in at least 18 cities, including London, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro and others have liberated similar anonymous figures. A pleasant surprise to Casablanca the global perception was unplanned and is now fully embraced on his site. You can find Casabianca now on a 12-city tour around the United States shedding light on more unknown figures in local museums.
